International Humanitarian Law Competitions / Moot Courts International humanitarian law (IHL) is the legal corpus comprised of the Geneva Conventions and the Hague Conventions, as well as subsequent treaties, case law, and customary international law. There are only a few real IHL moot competitions held on international arena. These are:
International IHL Competitions:
The famous multilanguage competition is open to students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Student teams (3 persons each) represent a party in a fictitious international dispute, such as a government, a rebel movement, or the Red Cross. The competition does not comprise pleadings before a panel of judges, but constitutes a simulation in real time, with incoming news and factual developments in the course of sessions. Held annually in April, preliminary round lasts until January.
The Competition is conducted in the form of a role play. The participants are offered a wide range of humanitarian law problems and situations to which they are to provide solutions using their decision-making skills. Teams must consist of three (3) students, who represent a University. Held annually in May in Belarus, preliminary round lasts until March.
Organised by the Hong Kong Red Cross Society, the objective of this IHL Moot is to raise the awareness of international humanitarian law in the region. It is a traditional international law moot court competition in which students prepare written and oral arguments for one of the parties in a hypothetical case before the International Court of Justice.

Speech examples: Verapat Pariyawong's performance at Regional Asia Cup IHL Moot Competition 07' is an excellent example of how one should speak and argument his / her position in IHL moot courts. Verapat represented Alstaat, which demanded extradition of Dr. Hattin, a doctor who allegedly mutilated limbs of Alstaat soldiers during a past armed conflict. Dr. Hattin was seeking asylum in Rodmania and claimed that the mutilation he performed was required to save lives of the wounded soldiers. Download
